Committed to promoting the work of innovative young directors, Hof was originally founded in 1967, featuring New German Cinema directors like Werner Herzog, Wim Wenders, and Rainer Maria Fassbinder. Variety describes Hof as “a linchpin in the trio of German fests (with Berlin and Munich)…few long weekend film fests command the prestige that Hof has.” Mile Zero is one of three Canadian feature films being presented at the five-day festival. The series features over 125 screenings, attracting upwards of 30,000 visitors to the Northern Bavarian town. Previous Hof screenings have featured the work of Canadian director David Cronenberg (Spider), and other internationally prominent directors such as Neil Jordan (The Crying Game) and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run). Mile Zero director Andrew Currie will be in attendance at the screening, which will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Mile Zero stars Michael Riley (Perfectly Normal,Amistad, Powerplay,100 Days in the Jungle) as Derek, and local child actor Connor Widdows (Freddy Got Fingered) as his son Will. Set in Vancouver, the film tells the story of an intensely loving but emotionally fragile man who is unable to deal with the breakdown of his marriage. As Derek’s attempts to regain love become more extreme, he hatches a desperate plan to get his family back that involves kidnapping his young son and taking him to the Rocky Mountains. The film was written by Halifax-based writer Michael Melski, and produced by Trent Carlson and Blake Corbet of Anagram Pictures inc, a Vancouver-based production company. Mile Zero has played to critical acclaim at over twenty international film festivals, winning several awards, including top honours at the WorldFest Houston International Film Festival (Platinum Award for Best First Feature), and the Victoria Independent Film and Video Festival (City TV Award – Best First Feature).
